Evidence in the forms of documents and inscriptions do not appear often in the history of ancient South India. Although there are signs that the history dates back to several centuries BCE, we only have any authentic archaeological evidence from the early centuries of the common era.

During the festival season at Poornathrayeesa Temple. Gold caparisoned elephants are symbol of wealth for the temple and these beliefs are carried over through centuries of tradition.
The 'Ambalam Kathi Utsavam' (temple on fire) at Poornathrayeesa temple as reminiscence of the past when a sudden outbreak of fire consumed a large portion of the temple on flames during 1921.
